GEOTHERMAL ENERGY IN TURKEY
Turkey is ranked 5th richest country in the world and 1st in Europe Region in terms of geothermal energy potential. The total geothermal theoretical heat potential of Turkey (hydrothermal 0–3 km) has been calculated by Turkish Geothermal Association as 60’000 MWt.
Western part of the Turkey could be considered as the most intense and high potential region for geothermal source where Energy Holding's geothermal concessions are located.
Geothermal energy production’s share in total production is increasing every year and is expected to continue thanks to regulatory incentives and government support.
A feed-in tariff (FIT) mechanism, is in place, designed to accelerate geothermal investments, by offering long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to geothermal energy investors.
Turkey has implemented a new law and regulation in 2019 allowing hybrid energy production (e.g. geothermal power plants are allowed to have solar and wind power combination using the same power plant infrastructure and pricing mechanism).
